What My Sore Butt Taught Me About Healing and Being Sober Curious

Aug 06, 2025

A few weeks ago, I did something I’ve done countless times before—I went to the gym.

I’ve been finding a good rhythm lately. With no more school drop-offs (hello, empty nester life), my mornings are finally my own. That day, I decided to switch up my usual barbell squats and opted for a front squat, hugging a weight instead.

Felt good. Felt strong.
Back home. Coaching clients. Guest podcast spots. All smooth.

Then the next day: pain.
From my right butt cheek down—sciatic-style pain that made it hard to move, let alone function.

Chiro visits followed. It started to settle.
So what did I do? Tried to catch up.
A short spin on the bike. A bit of movement. A “gentle” 10 minutes... which turned into 20.

And just like that—back to square one.

The Lesson? Healing Takes Time.

Here’s what I realised while lying on my back with ice packs and way too much time to think:

If I were still drinking, I would’ve ignored the pain.
I would’ve pushed through. Numbed it out with wine.
And then felt worse the next day—physically, mentally, emotionally.

But now that I’m alcohol-free, I actually hear what my body is trying to tell me.

This is one of the unexpected gifts of being sober curious in midlife:
You reconnect with your body.
You start listening to what she needs—not just what society expects.

For Midlife Women, Rest Isn’t Lazy—It’s Essential.

If you’re a woman in midlife navigating grey area drinking, you’ve likely spent years pushing through, people-pleasing, putting yourself last.

But here’s the truth:
Self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

Whether you’re healing your back or re-evaluating your relationship with alcohol, rushing the process won’t help.

  • Listen to your body.

  • Honour your limits.

  • Celebrate the pause.

  • Let rest be part of the progress.

What I Wish Someone Told Me Sooner:

Healing (physical or emotional) isn’t linear.
It’s not about perfection.
It’s about showing up for yourself, one choice at a time.

So if you need the permission today:
Take the break.
Rest your body.
Say no.
And yes—listen to your butt.
