A Perfect Day on the Mornington Peninsula
A Relaxed Day in Mornington, Mt Martha & Moorooduc
Looking for a relaxed day out in Mornington? You're in the right place.
People always ask me where to go down here.
The trouble is, the Mornington Peninsula has too much to love for one day — so I'm starting at the northern end, around Mornington, Mt Martha and Moorooduc, and I'll head further down another time.
This is the part of the world I know best. The cafes, the shopping, the long lunches, the little browse-and-linger spots that make a day out feel like a proper treat.
No rushing. No ticking boxes. Just the good stuff, done well.
Coffee first — Via Battisti, Mt Martha
Every good day starts with coffee.
Via Battisti in Mt Martha is lovely for a coffee and something to eat — very Italian, properly done. It's not a long-linger spot, more a beautiful start to the day before you get going.
Breakfast or lunch — Dreamer, Mornington
For a sit-down meal, Dreamer in Mornington has a real Byron Bay feel about it — relaxed, easy, the kind of place you don't want to rush.
It's also wonderful with little ones, so if you've got the grandkids in tow (as I sometimes will), it's a winner.
A morning on Main Street, Mornington
Here's my tip: you could happily park up on Mornington's Main Street and spend the whole day without going anywhere else.
It's a gorgeous strip for a slow browse, and exactly the kind of shopping I love — full of small, well-run businesses worth knowing.
A few I always make time for:
Farrells Bookshop — a family-owned business for over thirty years, and a genuinely good bookshop, which is harder to find than it should be. Something for everyone, and the sort of place you go in for one book and leave with three.
Zen Living — beautiful homewares, gifts and jewellery, with the loveliest gift wrapping. If you need a present that looks like you tried, this is where you go.
When you're ready for a break, the strip is full of cafes and restaurants — so you never have to go far for a coffee or a long lunch.
A few places to eat on Main Street
If you're spending the day on the strip, you won't go hungry. A few I'd point you to:
The Winey Cow — easy, good, the sort of spot that just works.
DOC — for pizza done properly.
The Royal Hotel — with water views, lovely for a relaxed bite.
The Rocks — if you're after something a little more special.
The one to drive for — The Studio & Co, Moorooduc
Now for somewhere a little different, and worth the short drive out to Moorooduc.
The Studio & Co is hard to sum up, because it's so many things at once. Glass blowing. Painters and artists at work. A gallery. Food. Books. All of it beautifully artisan, and the kind of place you wander through losing track of time.
Bring no agenda. That's how it's best enjoyed.
The whole point
You don't need to do all of this in a day — that's why I've kept it to one corner of the Peninsula.
Pick a few. Leave room to linger. A good day down here isn't a checklist — it's permission to slow down and enjoy yourself.
Which, the older I get, is exactly what I'm here for.
Next time, I'll take you further down the Peninsula — there's plenty more I can't wait to share.
